Our mission is to promote the future of Italy by contributing to sustainable economic development and investing in competitiveness: we have been growing with you since 1850
Sustainability has always been part of our DNA. Ever since it was founded in 1850, CDP has made itself a promoter of the country’s growth, taking on a central role, unique of its kind, in Italian finance. Using the extensive network of post offices and the large collection of savings that derives from it, CDP has always financed the development of the Italian economy serving the public interest through initiatives having a clear positive social impact.
Over the years, the Group has expanded the scope of its activity: to the traditional financing of public works carried out by local administrations, has been added the activity of investment in infrastructure and support of businesses, in terms of their growth in size, research of innovative business models and internationalisation. Through its international cooperation activities, CDP also plays an essential role in the construction of sustainable scenarios on a global scale, establishing solid relationships with developing countries. Furthermore, the Group promotes urban regeneration and the search for new forms of housing that are more sustainable and have a low environmental impact.
Today our commitment to the growth of the country is recognized internationally: since 2016 we have been the National Promotional Institution and every day we provide assistance for the sustainable development of Italy.
In 2016, the CDP Group initiated a project to define its strategy for creating a shared value. The first step along this path led to the identification of some priority themes for sustainable development through the materiality matrix tool.
The analysis of materiality is the main method adopted by companies to identify, evaluate and prioritise the relevant sustainability issues that affect the ability to create value in the short, medium and long term.
By comparing the strategies adopted by the main players in the financial market and other industrial sectors, both Italian and international, the CDP Group has identified a list of 20 themes of sustainable development in the environmental, social, economic and governance fields.
Starting from the corporate business model, a panel of stakeholders was identified, representative of the Group’s activities and areas of intervention, with whom targeted consultation activities were carried out. From 30 individual interviews addressed to CDP staff and to an authoritative and selected number of opinion makers, representatives of our shareholders, the world of foundations, companies, institutions and civil society, there emerged all the expectations and intervention priorities that the main external stakeholders have of the CDP Group.
By integrating the external results with the priorities defined by the Group, we were able to design our first materiality matrix, which identifies the 6 priority themes of sustainable development that form the basis of the CDP Group's value creation model.
